Hambatan dalam Penerapan Budaya Omotenashi oleh Mahasiswa Internship

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the various challenges faced by internship students in implementing the culture of omotenashi within the environment of Japanese ryokan (traditional inns). The concept of omotenashi, which emphasizes selfless hospitality and meticulous attention to detail, serves as the cornerstone of service standards in Japan's traditional hospitality industry. The research employed a qualitative methodology, utilizing in-depth interviews and direct observations as primary data collection techniques to examine the students' day-to-day experiences during their internship programs. The findings indicate that internship students encountered several significant obstacles that hindered their operational effectiveness. The primary challenges identified include a limited vocabulary range, substantial difficulty in comprehending fast-paced speech and nuances from native speakers, and a fundamental lack of understanding regarding cultural expressions deeply embedded in guest interactions. These linguistic and cultural barriers restricted the students’ overall ability to deliver hospitality services that fully satisfy the rigorous standards of authentic omotenashi. Consequently, this study emphasizes the crucial importance of developing robust linguistic and cultural competence for students participating in internship programs in Japan. Comprehensive pre-departure training and continuous immersion in both practical language skills and cultural etiquette are essential. Enhancing these competencies will enable interns to overcome communication barriers, adapt seamlessly to traditional work environments, and effectively bridge the gap between academic preparation and professional expectations in Japanese hospitality.
